HOUSTON – Houston is warm and muggy, but quiet for now.

That all looks to change as we get into the weekend as a cold front moves into the area.

Rainfall is looking like a good bet starting Saturday evening and into Sunday morning.

Here is what it looks like right now.

Weekend rain

Showers and storms will begin in Northwest Texas before spreading east and southeastward across the state as the cold front begins to push southward.

By 11 p.m. Saturday, computer models are showing a fairly large area of showers and storms spreading from North Texas and into the Hill Country. This will continue to push eastward and looks to impact the Houston area. The timing of the rain will be refined the closer we get to the event when shorter range computer models can start to pinpoint it better.

By early Sunday morning, a large area of southeast Texas should be seeing the rain. Severe weather is not expected at this time, but some areas could see heavy rainfall which could lead to a flood threat.

By Sunday afternoon, the cold front will push through the Houston area and take the rain and storms with it.

Heavy rainfall threat

As mentioned earlier, the rainfall could be on the heavy side Sunday morning. For this reason, a moderate risk of flooding has been added to areas north of downtown Houston. These are the areas which will have the greatest chance of seeing some street flooding from the storms. A low risk of flooding exists elsewhere in the green shaded regions.

Computer models show the immediate Houston area could see possibly an inch to an inch and a half of rainfall Saturday night and into Sunday morning. As you head north, those projected numbers go up to the two and three inch range. A few areas could see more than that.

Taking a wider view of the projected rainfall totals, you can see a swath of three and four inch totals projected from the Hill Country and into areas north of Houston. This is definitely something to keep an eye on, especially if you are going to be traveling Sunday morning along I-45 between Houston and Dallas.

After the rain

Houston should dry out for around two days following Saturday and Sunday’s rain event. The next chance of rainfall arrives on Wednesday and into Thursday of next week.
